Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also featured experts in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
