Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to question particular decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
